The Secrets Of Decorating Your Home

We've all been there. You're redecorating your home and you've chosen all the right complimenting and contrasting designer fabrics and colours but, for some reason, it still doesn't look quite right. We've rummaged through some of the top advice from design experts all over – and chucked in a few of our own secrets – to bring you some fabulous tips and tricks when designing your home.

4 Troublesome Scenarios | Tips And Tricks From The Design Experts

  • Scenario One - You've finished decorating your main living room with a sink-your-toes-in designer rug, misty silver embellished curtains, oak wood floor and intense rouge wallpaper. It's beautiful, except, every time you cosy up on your plush new sofa, your eyes are drawn to the miserable naked corner to your left. What to do with it? Some modernists would say put a lamp there, but lamps are neither bright nor clever; they're dull – especially when that bulb pops. We'd advise purchasing a plant instead (we hear those groans of displeasure, but run with us); not just any plant – a tall, confident, and leafy plant to freshen up any interior and add a little Zen and charm to your room. Nurture it with a little water each day and it'll feel instantly more welcoming and homely the next time you snuggle up and watch a movie.
  • Scenario Two - You're having a girly night in, all bundled up on that sofa we mentioned above. There's wine, surprising stories and lots of laughter. What could possibly go wrong? Lots of red wine and giggling women sat on plush designer fabrics screams spillages to us. J. Randall Powers' advises ‘When ordering fabric, add two yards to the final order. You never want to be stuck with a ruined cushion and a discontinued fabric on a piece of upholstery. Call it insurance [...]'. Similarly, if you've a dog or cat who loves to sprawl out on your gorgeous sofa on those lazy mornings (who could blame them?) and you want to protect your designer fabrics from troublesome plucks and mucky paws, purchase some throws to tuck in and remove them when guests arrive.
  • Scenario Three - The room still doesn't feel right, even with the plant. Betsy Burnham says ‘Never push furniture up against the walls. By pulling your searing arrangement in (even just a few inches), you instantly warm up a space and create flow.' Who knew? If you only have a small living area, why not skip the sofa altogether and purchase some designer armchairs instead?
  • Scenario Four - You've painted a small room white to create the illusion of space, and it seems to work, but there's something missing. Purchase some artwork. Whether it's a colourful painting up on the wall or a fine sculpture adding artwork will to draw the eye, add a bit of colour and make a bare room sophisticated and stylish. Add plenty of different pillows too, in textured and coloured designer fabrics.
