If stripping old wallpaper is getting in the way of your grand redecorating plans, then this guide is for you! Doing some decorating at home can be a fun project, and we promise that replacing old wallpaper with some new luxury wallpaper doesn’t have to be such a daunting experience as you may think! Below we share with you some essential tips for getting started.

An Expert Guide To Stripping Your Wallpaper

  1. Start by making sure you have cleared the room of any items of furniture that could be broken easily. After that, cover the floor and any furniture in the room with several dustsheets to protect them. Don’t leave any precious furniture uncovered - you can be sure how much mess you might make!
  2. The simplest way to begin removing wallpaper is to take a safety knife and score down the whole length of the wallpaper. You don’t want to press too hard or you may damage the main wall, so keep an eye on that you aren’t pressing too hard.
  3. Your next task is to soak the wall - Do this by filling a large bucket of water with warm, soapy water and then apply this mixture to the areas on the wall you want to work on first. Leave this on for about ten minutes before continuing to pull the wallpaper off. If you’ve got stubborn wallpaper that doesn’t want to budge easily, then you could get yourself some purpose made wallpaper stripping solution.
  4. Using a craft knife is the best way to then remove your wallpaper. Gently start by trying to lift the edges and corners of the wallpaper. Then once you can get a hold of some, pull down the wallpaper using the strips you scored out before as a guide! Make sure you are delicate with the knife, as you don’t want to end up damaging the wall.
  5. Once you have used this technique to remove the wallpaper, you are nearly ready for your new luxury wallpaper! You may need to tidy up around the edges, but that shouldn’t take long. You can clean up the edges by using a craft knife or wallpaper scourer to gently pick off the remaining wallpaper. You may need to re soak some areas if they are particularly stuck!
  6. If your wallpaper is proving to be too tricky to remove using this method then you might have to use a steam wallpaper stripper to get it off! If you are doing more of a renovation instead a little redecorating, then investing in a one of these steamers could be a better option for you to consider.
